What a week in Tokyo really costs
Prices collected 19 October 2026 for travel 3 Dec–10 Dec 2026 · one traveller · 7 nights · EUR
Tokyo is where the intuition of this table breaks. The food line, €56 a day at mid-range and €21 without much effort, costs less than Rome's or Paris's, and it is not a loophole: convenience stores, lunch sets and noodle counters are the ordinary way the city eats. Tokyo is inexpensive on the ground and expensive to reach, so nearly the whole budgeting problem is the flight.
And the flight is a real problem. Both corridors we track, from Lisbon and from London, put the median near €1,142 for early December, and on both the cheapest quotes sit close to it: the spread that makes Rome flexible barely exists here. When the fare floor sits that high, the booking-window advice matters more than the date-flexibility advice; our quote guide covers the difference.
On the ground, budget €15 a day for transport, since the metro and rail network is a joy and a flat cost, and €59 for sightseeing, where temples and shrines charge little or nothing and it is the observation decks and museums that bill. A Tokyo week rewards the cheapest-accommodation instinct less than most cities. The trains will get you anywhere, but the last train ends early, and staying near it is worth the extra per night.
