What a week in Rome really costs
Prices collected 19 October 2026 for travel 3 Dec–10 Dec 2026 · one traveller · 7 nights · EUR
Rome has the widest spread between its cheapest and median fare of any city in this batch, 19% from Lisbon, which makes it the clearest case for flexible dates. The quotes ranged from €182 to a median of €217 on the same corridor, for dates a week apart. Moving a departure by a day buys more here than anywhere else we track.
The ground costs lean the other way. Food at €84 a day sits mid-table, and much of what Rome is famous for charges nothing: the Pantheon's piazza, the Spanish Steps, the queue-free churches on every other corner, and drinking fountains that have been running since the emperors. Our sightseeing figure of €36 a day assumes you pay for the headline sites, the Colosseum complex and the Vatican museums, because most visitors will, once.
Where Rome quietly taxes a budget is dinner structure: a cover charge per person at sit-down restaurants, on top of the menu, is standard rather than a scam. The food table's mid-range tier already absorbs it, but a string of €4 espresso stops at the counter instead of a table does too.
