A December week in Rio is a summer week; the southern-hemisphere calendar flips everything. Brazilians are starting their holidays, the beaches are filling, and the fare table shows it: €948 median from Lisbon, €948 from Madrid, for a window that would be low season in Lisbon.

What keeps the total sane is that Rio's headline experiences charge little or nothing. The sand is free, and the views cost a tram or a train ticket.
